FAREWELL TO MR, VENABLES.

Mr G. W. Venables, who left to-day for Waipukurau, was entertained at a farewell social at Cambridge West on Tuesday night. There was a fair attendance despite the very stormy weather prevailing. Vocal items were contributed by Messrs H. Gibbs, Venables, and Peppercorn, and supper was provided by the ladies. The Rev. W. H. Beck, on behalf of the congregation, presented Mr Venables with a handsome travelling bag, suitably inscribed. The rev. gentleman alluded to the raluable services Mr Venables had rendered to the Church during his three years' residence here, and said he would be greatly missed. However, whilst they deeply regretted his departure, they all sincerely hoped he would meet with every success in his new venture.

Last evening, Mr and Mrs Venables were ••farewellcd " at the Gymnasium. There was a very large attendance. Mr Joseph Gane, of Pukerimu, and one of the circuit stewards, (in the absence of Mr R. Reynolds) presented Mr Venables on behalf of the town congregation with a handsome marble clock, and also an ornamental watch pendant. Messrs Gane. G. E. Clark, E. Veale, and Rev. W. H. Beck each testified to Mr Venables' many admirable qualities. Reference was also made to the good work done by Mrs Venables on behalf of the temperance cause. Mr Venables feelingly replied, and said he was loath to leave Cambridge, but circumstances over which he had no control rendered it necessary that he should seek fresh fields. Parlour games were participated in during the evening, and a vocal programme was gone through. Solos were given by Miss Hooker, Miss Onions, Mrs Shepherd, and Messrs Venables and J. Gane. A violin solo was played by Miss R. Nixon. Refreshments were handed round, and a very pleasant evening was spent. Mr and Mrs Venables carry with them the best wishes of numerous friends in this district.
