EVENING SHOES.

The evening shoe has taken to assert) itself quite suddenly, and though it has always been more or less important, it has not been considered absolutely necessary to go into details of colour or contrast. bor a long time past a black patent leather shoe has played many parts, and has been considered correct if worn with any coloured costume. Even with a white frock, except, of course, in the case of a debutante or bride, has the useful, highly-polished shoe been permissible. But now (says an Australian paper) in addition to all the little expensive accessories which go to make up a girl’s toilette nowadays, comes the pronounced fashion of wearing shoe and stockings which match the gown, or of some vivid colour which is part of the scheme of contrast. For example, a girl in a black gown wears a scarlet silk petticoat, which shows as she lifts her skirt and scarlet shoes and stockings. These or pale blue ones, or other of bright green can be worn with a white frock or any shade with which they contrast well. Gold and silver shoes are both popular and smart this winter, and they are worn indiscriminately with any gown, but the hose must match the footwear. Satin shoes, by reason of their bad wearing qualitities, have given place to kid ones, particularly of the undressed variety, which are so comfortable, and easily cleaned. Though the heels for out-door wear have become much lower, the square military heel being most in demand, those of dancing shoes are just as high as ever. The most desired shape of foot nowadays is long and narrow. There is no advantage in being able to wear a No. 2 or o boot if the foot is inclined to be wide. Many girls prefer to buy a size larger, and stuff the toes out so that the extra length takes from the width.
