A native woman named Paroa, who was awaiting trial on a charge ot child murder, died in the Napier hospital. Isabella Glenn, a boarding house Keeper, was fined <£3s for sly-grog selling at Dunedin on Tuesday. The Education Board has appointed James Sutton to the Tamahere School and Miss Goldsworthy to the Hamilton East School. It is estimated that the Wellington Racing Club will make between £4OOO and £SOOO profit over its recent Cun meeting. 1 An elderly man named Robert Gray Mathieson died suddenly at Wellington on Tuesday. Heart disease is supposed to have been the cause of death. On Tuesday a young lady who had been collecting rents for her father, was garrotted at Ponsonby, Auckland, and a bag containing the money stolen. The police have the matter in hand. An old man named Shannon fired three shots at Mr Boland, police magistrate at Hillston (New South Wales). The magistrate was not seriously injured. Shannon shot himself dead. A man named Thomas Coates, a bookkeeper at the Waitemata Hotel, Auckland, who has been suffering from a weak heart, fainted in front of the hotel on Tuesday evening, and died a few moments later. A company with a capital of half a million sterling has been formed in New York to build an entertainment tower “one-eighth of a mile” (550 feet) high on Coney Island, with roof-gardens and dancing halls. A day or two ago Mr Richard Holden, a Waitomo settler, when fossicking in the neighbourhood of the Waitomo caves came upon a small cave in a corner in which he found a more or less complete skeleton of moa bones in a well preserved state.
