Hems from the London Jewish Chronicle of August 7th: —After the war broke out, the Chief Rabbi wrote a prayer for the restoration of peace, to be read at Synagogue services during the continuance of the war. . . . According to the special correspondent of the Daily Express, a battalion of Jewish volunteers oflered its services to the Minister of War. It was sent to the front. . . . Among the members of Parliament called to the colours were Sir Philip Sassoon Mr Lionel de Rothschild, and Mr Frank Goldsmith. The Hon. N. Charles Rothschild joined his regiment, and Messrs Evelyn de Rothchild and Anthony de Rothschild joined the Hussars. . . . The

call to arms has found the Jews faithful to their respective Governments, not excluding Russia, which in lime of peace is never tired of making war on our coreligionists. There are no fewer than 55,000 Jewish soldiers in the standing army in Russia, and the Jewish Reserves of fully trained soldiers of the last ten years alone furnish another 150,000 men. To these figures we may add a large number of imperfectly-trained second-class reservists.
