THE ATTACK ON ANTWERP.
GARRISON MAKE SORTIES NIGHTLY. DESPERATE FIGHTING AT TERMONDE AND AERSHOT. ENEMY SUSTAINS HEAVY LOSSES. Received 9 p.tn., Ist. Antwerp. September 30. The garrison continues its guerilla tactics, and nightly sorties have terrorised the German outposts. A train was blown up and the outposts picked olf. Despite the activity of the garrison the number of civilians killed and wounded is still in excess I of the Belgian soldiers. There was desperate fighting at Termonde and Aerschot from Sunday j until Tuesday. The Germans on Sunday were heavily reinforced until the combatants ■ were nearly 150,000. Despite superior German artillery a Belgian battery I at Auoegem, after losing 17 gunners, silenced the German battery. The bombardment of Forts Wallhem and Wavre continues. The Germans also attacked Forts Leizele and Bredouck, but several I sorties drove the Germans back with heavy losses. Received 12.20 a.ra., 2nd. Antwerp, September 30. During the bombardment of Lierre the shells wrecked the hospital, | killing four wounded soldiers and two women. Received 8.45 a.m., 2nd. Rotterdam, October 1. I The Germans tired part of Tournai. They demanded a fine of £2,000,000. French notables were taken as hostages. Advices from Antwerp state that positions between the three lines of I fortifications have been levelled so as not to interfere with the fire of the I guns. Villas and houses have been demolished. Experts are of opinion I t hat the seizure ot Antwerp would involve an enormous loss of life, which ; the Gormans in their present condition dare not risk.
