WAIKATO WINTER SHOW

ANNUAL MEETING

THE NEW PRESIDENT. The annual meeting of the Waikato Winter Show Association was held today, in the King's Theatre, Hamilton. Mr F, E. Smith, the retiring president, occupied the chair and was accompanied on the platform by Messrs Wm. Kothwell and A. C. Atkin, vice-presidents; Wm. H. Paul, secretary, and C. L. MacDiarmid, solicitor. There were about 100 members present. Mr MacDiarmid explained that the special resolution passed at the meeting in December last, dealing with the election of vice-presidents was void. It should have been effected at the previous annual meeting and died at that stage. The minutes of the December meeting had been con firmed merely as a record of the proceedings. On the motion of Mr LaiTerty, seconded by Mr Atkin, the proceedings of the December meeting were declared void.

in the absence of Mr S. J. Bennett, who had given notice of a motion that nominations for the ollice of president be received by the secretary seven clear days prior to the day of election, Mr Atkin moved the motion, which on a show of hands was carried by a large majority.

The president, referring to the eighth annual balance sheet, referred to the success of the show and the leading position taken by the Association, evidencing the productiveness ot the district.

Mr Atkin, seconded by Mr W. Kothwell, moved the adoption of the balance sheet.

Mr J. E. lidd said it had been stated on the street that there had been a sum spent on alcoholic refreshments. Sums from £2O to as high as £37 had been mentioned. In justice to the executive he would like to know what amount had been spent.

The president said £2O 9s had been spent. That included the entertainment of judges, stewards and exhibitors, and he thought the amount was perfectly reasonable. (Hear, hear and applause). Mr Tidd: Was that spent on alcoholic refreshment?

The president: I said so. Mr M. Darke: May I also mention that 4Jd was spent on—

The president (interrupting): I don't want to go into the matter further. The report by Mr V. H. Sanson, auditor, stated that there was a very large amount outstanding for subscriptions, but credit would be taken only for what was considered to be good. In the past depreciation had not been written oil regularly each year. He would suggest that the whole of the land, buildings and plant be re-valued, and that henceforth regular sums be written off each period, thus putting the whole thing on a business-like basis. Mr Lafferty referred to the amount (over £SO) for petty cash as large. Mr R. English, treasurer, said he could assure them that the amount was not large. Members had no conception of the amount of work it had reference to. (Applause). The accounts were kept by the secretary, checked by himself, and examined by the auditor.

In reply to Mr W. F. Mason, the president said the tea-rooms account had been squared up with the exception of the remit to a commiUee to present the ladies who assisted with some small token of recognition. Mr Atkin referred to the recurring prominence of unpaid subscriptions.

Mr W. Rothwell said some members of the committee had been found to be unfinancial, and did not attend the meetings, keeping better men out of a good position. On the motion of the president, seconded by Mr Atkin, Mr 11. J. Greenslade was re-elected patron. For the office of president, Mr W. J. McKee was nominated by Messrs \V. F. Mason and A. C. Atkin, and Mr Wm. Rothwell by Messrs John Macgregor and J. E. Tidd. Mr McKee was elected on a ballot by <JG to 4G.

Mr McKee then took the chair, Mr Smith returning thanks for the support he had received. He hoped to remain a useful member of the association, though not accepting nomnation for the committee. He congratulated Mr McKee on his election, and also Mr Rothwell for the magnificent light he had put up. On Ihe motion of Mr T. Hinton,

seconded by Mr Darke, the retiring president was heartily thanked.

Mr McKee returned thanks, and said it was a position he had never dreamt of holding. However, as those he had been associated with on the committee and with whom he had worked had .urged him to accept nomination, he was proud to hold the position, and would do his best for the association. (Applause). Mr Rothwell, in thanking lub supporters, said he knew they had come a long distance. None of them belonged to the town, where the opposition had been worked up against him for the past fortnight or so, He had been connected with the show ever since its inception, and had worked hard for it. He did not say he would withdraw from it altogether, but he thought he had done his share. He was glad to see that Mr McKee had got into the position. Let him have a go at it. He was a good man for the place, (Applause).

Messrs J. S. Uond and W. F. Mason were elected vice-presidents. Mr English was re-elected treasurer, and Mr V. H. Sanson auditor.
