SMOKING IN A MINE.

A trucker employed in the Extended mine appeared before Mr E. Rawson, S.M., today, charged with having matches in his possession and smoking a portion of a cigarette in a place where safety lamps were ordered. Accused, who was defended by Mr E. H. Nortbcroft, pleaded guilty, counsel stating that the act was involuntary, and that accused immediately extinguished the cigarette when reminded of the gravity of his act.
Mr Woods, mine manager, explained that the men had been warned, and there was no excuse. The magistrate, to emphasise the necessity for avoiding such careless habits, inflicted a fine of £3 and costs, the fine being made small as accused had been dismissed.
