MEAT EXPORT TRADE.

CABLEGRAMS

United PreßS Association. By Electric Telegraph—Copyright

PERIOD OF STAGNATION. MANY WORKS CLOSED. Received 11.35 a.m., 17th. Melbourne, June 17. The meat export trade is stagnated. A number of the refrigerating works, are at a standstill, and many slaughtermen are idle. The shortage and high price of stock is the cause.

UNCERTAINTY IN NEW SOUTH WALES. Reseived 12.10 p.m., 17th. Sydney, June 17. The Premier reported that as the result of investigations the alleged operations of the meat trust in New South Wales are unknown. Whether the trust is operating extensively in Sydney or not, the fact remains that a considerable portion of the output of meat is being purchased by certain firms whose names are usually associated with the alleged American Meat Trust. Very few Queensland cattle are coming forwaid and excitement and uncertainty exists in trade circles due to a large extent to the fact that American firms are becoming keen competitors for the purchase of New South Wales meat.
