THE FATEFUL LETTERS. A STATEMENT AND A DENIAL. Paris, April 9. Further evidence was heard yesterday in the [case in which Mdme. Caillaux, the wife of the ex-Minister for Finance, is charged with shooting M. Calmette, editor of the Figaro. M. Caillaux, who was further questioned, stated that M. Barthou, the ex-Piemier had told him that the former Mdme. Caillaux once showed M. Barthou the stolen letters spoken of during the previous day's evidence. When confronted with M. Caillaux yesterday, M. Barthou denied this incident, and maintained that he was unaware of the existence of the letters until M. Calmette's death. Received 8.50 a.m., 11th. Paris, April 10. At the magisterial enquiry M. Vidal, publicist, confirmed the statement that the Figaro intended to publish three of M. Caillaux's letters, and added that Calmette was seeking evidence of Caillaux's connection with the case ef Prieu, the South American millionaire, whose heirs are claiming his estate from the French Government. Calmette alleged that Caillaux offered the heirs part if they agreed that Caillaux should have the remander of the estate.
