A SHOCKING FATALITY

MAN RUN OVER BY A LOCOMOTIVE. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Christchurch, Friday. A shocking fatality occurred in the early hours of yesterday morning, Timothy O'Connor, a labourer residing at Islington, losing his life through being run over bv a railway engine. The fatality occurred shortly after 1 a.m., about half a mile south of the Islington railway station. The driver of the midnight goods train from Christchurch to Ashburton, shortly after leaving Islington, noticed a man apparently lying across the rails. He immediately applied the brakes, but unfortunately the train happened to be a very heavy one, and he could not pull up in time. The result was that the unfortunate man was dragged some 40yds under the engine, and his body was terribly mangled. Death must have been instantaneous. O'Connor was a single man, and was well known in Islington.
