HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held last night. Mr Manning presided, and the other members present were Crs Fow, Bond, McKinnon, Speight, Howden, llayter, Tristram and Hammond,

Numbering of Streets. Hamilton Chamber of Commerce wrote asking that sections 30 to 40 of the Auckland by-laws, bearing on the competency of motor drivers, be adopted by the council; also that piovision be made for the numbering of , buildings.—The first portion of this letter was left to the legal and finance committee to report. —ln connection with the numbering of the buildings in streets, the Mayor said the council did not think it necessary at the present time to number the buildings in a growing town like Hamilton. New buildings were going up every day. He moved that a reply be sent accordingly. - Cr McKinnon: The whole scheme would be out of order in a very short time.--The motion was carried unanimously. Willoughby Street, Five residents in Willoughby street sent in a petition that the footpath of that street should be tarred and | sanded, as it was "all hills and hol- , l ows ,"—Petitioners to be informed that, in respect of work in the j vicinity, the application will receive i attention indue course.—The engij neer said the work required to be 1 done. Name Plates for Streets. In reply to a communication from j the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, 1 the Mayor said it was only fair to the Chamber of Commerce to say that they suggested that name plates should be exhibited on the streets. He moved that name plates be fixed denoting all streets in the borough, in as prominent a position as possible. The time for this being done had come, he said.—The engineer was instructed to make inquiry as to the various forms of plates required. Day Men.

On the motion of the Mayor, it was agreed that the finance committee should consider the whole question of work on the streets with reference to the day system.—Ci Hammond said there was a good deal going on that should not be, and the sooner this matter was gone into the better.- It was agreed to deal with this matter at a special meeting on Monday next. Garden Place. Cr McKinnon moved that the resolution with reference to Garden Place be rescinded. With regard to revenue from the front portion, the position of the public threw the thing out. Perhaps on a future occasion they would think better of it.---The Mayor seconded, and the motion was agreed to. Abattoir Plans. The secretary of the Department of Agriculture, etc., writing on Bth inst., intimated that the plans of the proposed abattoir site and buildings would be looked into, and that the council would be further communicated with on the matter. Writing on 14th inst., Mr Keakes, director of the live stock and meat division, stated that, on going into the said plans he found that there were some points on which alterations would prove of material advantage. He was, therefore, arranging for Mr A. R. Young, veterinary supervisor, to visit Hamilton and go into the mutter with the architect. Ikwould arrange to make the trip at the earliest possible convenient date. Miscellaneous. Mr J. Thornes asked leave to surrender the lease of his sections in Rostrevor and Vialou streets. Having last year been refused permisson to subdivide rendered the land useless to him.—The council could rot eec its way to accede. Mr D. H. McKenzie, Sillary street, asked, on behalf of the residents in that locality, that Sillary and Mcß'arlane streets be opened for traltic from Graham street via Sillary street to a point on McFarlane street where traffic is already practicable. -—Sent to the works committee to report.

Messrs Gray'B Pharmacy wrote asking that the low-level footway ot the side of their premises at the comer of Garden Place be reformed.— Refeired to engineer.

Mr A. T. Maunder asked that drains on Seddon road, at its intersection with Ward street should receive attention.—Left to the engineer.

Messrs Lamprell and Forbes asked that the footpath in East steet be put in order, and also that the owner of land adjoining their sections be required ' 'at once" to remove blackberry bushes which were growing to a tremendous height. —Referred to the works committee, to receive attention fn due course. Four residents in Charlemont street sent a petition praying that, as the channels were all grown over, making things awkward after heavy rains, the necessary repairs should be carried out. —Works committee to report.

The Waipa County Council wrote to the effect that they objected to the item "lighting" in the account for maintenance of the above bridge, and had deducted the amount charged. —Received. The Railway Department forwarded the deeds for the maintenance of the railway footbridge, for execution by the borough council. Messrs Daniel I ami Cray, architects, wrote asking that the formation work on the footpath fronting the new Presbyterian Church at Claudelands should, if possible, be finished before the date of opening the church, February Ist. • - Granted.

Mr W. Wyllie wrote inquiring whether the council hud decided to acquire his leasehold section 148, Hamilton West, for three-fourths of the Government value, for the purpose of building workmen's homes.

To be informed that nothing has been done.

Applications for auctioneers' licenses received from Messrs Hawke and Armstrong and Bond and Co. were granted. Other two applications were referred back.

Mr W. G. Scott, applied fur a license fur a billiard-room in McGuire's Buildings, Victoria street. John McKay also applied for a similar license for premises in Victoria street of which he had taken a lease from Mr J. Jenkin.—Both granted under the usual conditions. Engineer's Report. Mr Sims reported as follows:Street Work. Ordinary maintenance work has received attention during the month. Portions of Victoria street, Bryce and Selkirk streets have been scarified, re-sur-faced, and rolled. In Clyde street, Hamilton East, the path on the south side has been set back to the proper line. Five ar.d a-half chains of tar macadam in Ward street are pract'cally completed, and 1 propose to immediately proceed with top dressing in Victoria street from Collingwood street to Ward street. Paths in the following streets have been tarred and sanded:—Bryce street, Selkirk street, London street, Clifton road, and Victoria street from railway line to Whitiora culvert, and at present Ulster street is being dealt with.

Claudelands Streets. In accordance with instructions, the extension work on Boundary road has been reduced. The cutting at the West End will be through in a few days, and the balance of the formation is finished. The formation of River road, from O'Neill street to Boundary road, has been commenced, and with the loose nature of the ground good progress is being made, I submit herewith for the council's approval a cross section of proposed formation, showing a 2tift carriage way, two Bft paths, leaving a strip of 12ft on each side which 1 recommend be planted in suitable trees and laid out [in grass. I propose commencing the formation of O'Neill and George streets to the permanent levels next week. I should be glad of an instruction as to the council's responsiblity in {removing and reinstating boundary fences where such are affected by the new formation, Gibbons' Creek Culvert.—lTelimi
