RAGLAN.

The weather during the past week has been somewhat stormy and not by any means ideal for harvesting, torrential rain fell for a little while on Monday last, and rain, accompanied with hail, the following day, since which light showers have fallen, and harvesting has proceeded intermittently, one day’s work being done in three. A few minutes previous to the rain on Monday afternoon the wind blew with terrific force, the eaitn in some places being blown like sand off ploughed fields. In some parts of the district splendid takes of swedes are to he seen, more especially out in the Te Mata and Kuapuke districts, while in other parts, generally where the drilling has taken place later, the Strike is not nearly at satisfactory. On one property, noted for scuccssful crops, most of the young plants mysteriously disappeared, and those left had their leaves riddled and were making poor headway. Investigation showed a little brown caterpillar buried at the roots of nearly every plant. The ladies who arranged for the entertainment of the Amoknra hoys at the recent carnival found themselves after paying all expenses in possession of a credit balance of 30s. This was forwarded to Captain Hooper, 8.N.R., with the suggestion that something should be bought for the boys. Capt. Hooper has replied, on behalf of the staff and boys of the Amokura, expressing warm appreciation of the hospitality extended to them, which resulted in giving them a right royal time. They hoped to visit the port again on some future occasion. The boys had decided unanimously to purchase a football for amusement when ashore with the money, and it would he known as the “Raglan Ball.” Motor cars are becoming quite a noticeable week-end feature, and visitors, in spite of the inclemency of the weather, are numerous.

At a special meeting of the Town Board the statutory half-holiday was changed from Saturday to Wednesday, a majority of business people being in favour of the latter day.
