A MEMORABLE FUNCTION. Fine weather prevailed for the second day of the Waikato Show, and everything passed off most successfully. A holiday feeling was in the air, and smiling faces were seen on every aide. The shops were all closed, thus enabling the business people of Hamilton to attend the most popular fixture of the year. In addition a large nmuber of visitors were present, and all day long a constant stream of humanity poured through the gates. The grounds presented a most pleasing appearance, the white tents of the various booths standing cut with excellent effect against the background of native bush, and the green sward was seen at its beat. The grand parade was an imposing sight, demonstrating clearly the excellence of the horseflesh which the Waikato district is producing. Every type of horse was represented, from heavy draught stallionsj;o tiny Shetand ponies. In the afternoon the Prime Minister, Hon. W. P. Massey, visited the show. He was warmly cheered on entering the grandstand encolsuie, and he spent his spare time in renewing old acquaintanceships. Mr Massey expressed himself as being much impresesd by the show, and by the possibilities of the district generally.

Great interest was taken in the various ring competitions, particularly in the jumping events. There were a large number of hdy riders, who displayed great virn and nerve, and proved that their mounts had bean well schooled. Nearly all rode astride, and the old fashioned sideappears to be passing into the limbo o£ forgotten things. Other signs of modern progress were the competitions arranged for motor can, which elicited great interest. The industrial exhibits were very comprehensive, and well up to standard. Prominent were those of a number of local firms who proved themselves able to compete successfully with the imported article. The exhibits in this section comprised vehicles, the latest dairying apparatus, harness, stoves, manures, seeds, agricultural machinery, gas engines—in fact, almost every article lhat interest the progressive farmer. The insistent cheap jack and leather-lunged showman were as usual present in force, and appeared to do a roaring trade. On the first day a wrestler, gorgeous in red tights and white buckskin boots, offered £1 to anybody whom he could not take a fall out of in five minutes. A young man from Cambridge took him up, and succeeded in winning the sovereign to the accompaniment of great applause. On the second day another contest took place between the two, and again the local lad was successful. He wriggled like an eel and landed on his feet like a cat, and had the professional completely baffled. At Sjo’clock the crowd commenced to y/end its way homewards, and the officials were able to take a wellearned rest conscious that the show had on the whole been one of the most successful ever held in Hamilton.

The necessity for more stand accommodation was amply demonstrated yesterday, when all the three stands were packed, and the gate receipts should show a considerable increase on any past year. The day passed off without any serious accidents; there were one or two spills in rhe jumping competitions, but they were of a minor character. The judging was concluded before luncheon, at which Mr J. W. Anderson, president, presided, and at its conclusion expressed the thanks of the association to the judges for the satisfactory manner in which they had carried out their duties. Messrs Armstrong and Donald replied. Owing to the chatter which was kept up it was almost impossible to hear their remarks, but from what was hearable the former congratulated the exhibitors in the light horse section on the excellence of the stock, and said the hunters were the finest he had seen in any part of the world. The catering was carried out by Mr J. Sinclair, of Auckland, in a most creditable manner, and both he and his staff must have appreciated the conveniences supplied by the new stand.

The cows in the various breeds were judged yesterday and some fine animals were shown. This was particularly so in the Jersey section. In the class for cow, four years old or over, the judge said he had never seen a better class of stock. The two leading prize-winners were bred by Mr C. Day, of Tamahere, but shown by the Ruakura Farm of Instruction. It uis worthy of note that with two exceptions the whole of the first prize-takers came from Mr Day’s herd, and his win of the cup presented by the Jersey Breeders’ Association for three best Jerseys in milk was a very popular one.

The pigs were not so numerous as usual, but some good animals were shown, Mr E. J. Rogers being the principal prize winner. In the list of stewards, as published yesterday and taken from the catalogue, the name of Mis A. C. Atkin was omitted in the Home Industries’ section. We are pleased to remedy the omission, as Mrs Atkin did Trojan’s work in this department. Yesterday Dr. Douglas staged a fine collection of roses in the Home Industries buliding, which attracted considerable attention. The attendance, as was generally anticipated, was a record, and it is generally put down at over 10,000. The gate <md aland takings totalled £415.
