Professor Mills was charged in Court today that, being the holder of a ticket issued by the Rai'way Depat tinent for Press reporting purposes, he used the ticket for another purpose, and that he travelled on the railway with intent to evade payment cl llm proper fare. He pleaded not guilty. The prosecution pointed out that the ticket was issued to Mr Reardon, editor of the Weekly Herald, a condition being that it must he used exclusively for Press reporters. Professor Mills travelled from Auckland to Wellington on" the ticket. Mr Reardon’s evidence was to the effect that Professor Mills was not exclusively employed aa a reporter of the Herald, but, during Ids engagement us a lecturer, it was part of ids duty to contribute to the paper. Witness felt that he was to blame, not Professor Mills. The second charge was withdrawn. and Professor Mills, having pleaded guilty to the first charge, was fined £3 and costs £2 2s. The Magistrate said that technically Professor Mills had been guilty, but the fault really lay with Mr Reardon. The appeal of Messrs Scott and Martindale against their convictions by a magistrate for publishing a notification relating to betting, was heard by Mr Justice Chapman. The contention for the appellants was that there was no proof that they had posted the betting cards, which formed the subject of prosecution. Judgment was reserved. Dunedin, Saturday. In the Arbitration Court today Norman Campbell and Agnes Campbell. of Janefield, near Mosgiel, claimed £273 aa compensation on the grounds that they were partial dependents on their son James, who was killed on March 7th by an accident at Millerton while in the employ of the Westport Coal Company. Decision was reserved. Edward Luwric claimed £2B 10s (id compensation from John Waldie, slaughterman, for an accident on March 29, whereby his elbow was fractured and other injuries sustained through falling off u ladder. For the plaintiff it was claimed that the accident occurred on tho third day of his employment. The defence was that the plaintiff was not engaged, and that he was helping the defendant’s son and other slaughtermen with the object of | securing an engagement. The de-1 fendant admitted that he gave plaintiff 2a Gd, and saw his son lend j him 10s. It was admitted that the | defendant’s son usually had an ) assistant, but that at the time of (ho 1 accident he had none.
