Mawson’s Fund Short. Sydney, November 11. Dr. Mawson is still £9OOO short of the sum required for his expedition, the total promised, including stores, amounting to a little over £40,000. Dr. Mawson, speaking at the Royal Society reception, said he had no great anxiety over the deficit, because he thought certain States, which had not yet contributed, would do so when they saw what good work was being done. An Unpopular Sister. Adelaide, November 11. Recently' three hospital nurses were dismissed for refusing to work under a certain sister. The other nurses supported them, and yesterday 8i were suspended. A special meeting of the board was held, and the nurses were informed that they laid themselves open to instant dismissal. They, still definitely refused to take duty under the unpopular sister. Later, they were informed that the board did not insist on their working under the sister, and they thereupon resumed work.

Brought and Bush Fires. Melbourne, November 11. Bush fires devastated a large area of the malee country in the Walpeup district. Owing to the drought in Queensland, the Lakes’ Creek Meat Works have been closed for the first time in 10 years. Four hundred men are idle.

Trouble on a Steamer. .Received 12.15 a.ra., 13th. Fremantle, November 12. As the steamer Belgic was leaving the wharf thirty firemen and deck M hands jumped ashore, the cause of the " trouble being the rigid enforcement of discipline. The deserters were arrested. Four ringleaders were senteced to 14 days, and the remainder to twelve hours’ imprisonment, and the loss of a day’s pay, and to be placed aboard again. Boating Fatality. Received 12.15 a.m., 13th. Brisbane, November 12. A sailing boat with six young men aboard capsized in a heavy sea. Three swam ashore greatly exhausted. The others clung to the boat and drifted all night. Two, Law and Ramsey, dropped off exhausted and were drowned, hut the third was rescued. Trams in Collision. Received 12.50 a.m., 13th. Sydney, November 12. Owing to the failure of a brake a tram collided with stationary cars at Coogee. The driver of the colliding tram and four passengers were taken to the hospital, the most serious being two women with concussion. Three others were slightly injured. Trades Union Party. Sydney, November 11. The Labour Council discussed the _ Barrier proposal for the formation of a new party. It was resolved that there was no necessity to form a separate trades union political party. Pigeon Shooting. Received 5.5 a.m. 12th. Melbourne, November 12. Wilkinson, the well-known pigeon shot, has accepted Ainst’s challenge foi £2OO a side to shoot a hundred birds.
