TATARS TIMBER COMPANY'S PROPOSALS.

Half a dozen Auckland members attended a conference called by Mr Macdonald this morning to consider the Taupn Totara Timber Company’s proposals. Mr Dalziell appeared on behalf of the company and gave a lengthv explanation of the scheme. In the course of his remarks he stated that Sir John Findlay, who was interested in the company, having taken a number of ordinary shares in consideration of legal expenses. In view of the financial position of the company these shares were practically of no value today. Dealing with objections raised by the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce, he declared that these would all be answered, and provision made to safeguard any danger that might arise. Before petitioning the House, they desired to obtain the views of the Auckland members regarding the scheme, which they desired to place before Parliament in such a form as would be acceptable.

The members present refrained from committing themselves on the subject, which they said required careful consideration; but if it was to bo dealt with this session the petition should be lodged forthwith. Mr Macdonald said the company wished the fullest public!ty given to its projects. He had received a telegram from the Taupo District Railway League conveying a resolution passed by a meeting of inhabitants of Onekeneke. Oruanui, Taupo, Tokuanu, and Wuirakei, protesting against the action of the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce in opposing the scheme. Mr Dalziell intimated that he would lodge the petition this week for appointment of a Parliamentary Committee to investigate the merits of the project. Wairakei, Last Night. The largest attended public meeting. fully representative of the district, was held at Taupo on Saturday evening to discuss the proposed extension of the Taupo Totara Timber Company’s railway from Mokai, via Wairakei, to Taupo. The meeting was most enthusiastic and unanimous. The Taupo District Railway League was formed and an executive committee was elected and empowered to pledge the league’s united support to the company’s project. A resolution was passed authorising the committee to immediately telegraph Mr Macdonald, the district member, strongly protesting against the action of the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce in opposing completion of the line. The proposed line, it was urged, was calculated to settle a large area of unoccupied lauds, and give tourists access to what is ierm»d the finest spa in the Southern Hemisphere.
