WAIKATO SHOW BEEF IN LONDON.

Mr J. C. Potts, secretary to the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association, has just received from the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Co.. Ltd., the judging and returns of the steers exhibited at the show at Claudelands in November last. It will be remembered that the cattle were judged alive on the show ground, and were then killed, frozen, and shipped to London, where they were judged as to their suitability for that market. The cattle were judged by Messrs W. Weddell and Co., Ltd., who write as follows: •‘ln connection with the 28 quarters Auckland beef shipped per Pakeha to be judged in London, we may say we had this beef in store a short time in order to get a satisfactory market, and have pleasure in advising that the beef was all of a most satisfactory quality, and suitable in all respects for the requirements of the London trade. You will observe from the account sales that the prices for the various lots show little difference, but each pen was exhibited at different stalls in order to show the beef to the numerous buyers who purchase off the hooks, at Smithfield. We place the beef in the following order; — Pen 940, 1; 940, 2; 942, 3; 939, 4; 043, 5; 941, 0; and 944, 7. When the cattle were judged alive the placing was as follows: 940 J. D. P. Morgan’s b and w Judas, 1. 946—Alex. Orr’s, 2. 941 J. D. P. Morgan’s David, 3. From the above it will be seen that the awards for the first and second bullocks were the same in both instances, a striking testimony to the soundness of the judgment of Mr W. Marks, who made the awards at Claudelands. The returns from the various carcases aro as follows; Pen 939. The gross amount received for the carcases was £77 0s 3d, from which has to be deducted the charges, £0 4s id, giving a net return in London of £7O 16s 2d. The Auckland charges, £l4 18a, less the credits for hides and offal, £l3 19s lid, bring the net amount received down to £69 18s Id, or within Is lid of £lO per head. In this connection, however, it must be remembered that one exhibit from each owner was frozen free of charge by the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Co.
