Mangawara.

Mr Alford, who recently bought Messrs Bailey and Bollard’s property at Mangawara has also leased the grazing of the Rewi Estate from the Government. There is some very good grass on the'estate, on which it is Mr Alford’s intention to put store cattle. Extensive burning of bush and scrub has been going on at several different farms. Mr J. Cavanagh had a splendid burn on his section at the beginning oi the week, while Mr Alford was fortunate with his bush burn last week. The public school reopened on Tuesday, the Bth inst, and there were a number of new scholars. The teacher. Miss Vincent, is very popular, and at the closing of the school last year was the recipient of a handsome present from the scholars. A Sunday school has been started recently here, and has become very popular. About 20 scholars attended when it was first started, and since then the number has steadily increased. It was felt that an institution of this kind was urgently required, and judging by the enthusiasm of scholars and teachers it bids fair to be come a very prosperous school.

A movement is on foot to have a sports meeting held here shortly. A strong committee has been formed to fix preliminaries in the way of canvassing for subscriptions and arranging the programme. Most of the potato crops in the district have suffered more or less from the blight; some splendid lots have been ruined jus*' as it seemed that they would yield exceptionally well. The oat crops have fared much better, and are now mostly in the stook or already stacked. The dry, warm weather has been very favourable for the harvesters.—Own Correspondent.
