Farming Notes.

Dairy cows require better shelter than beef animals. If a farmer has only common stock he should get a dairy bred sire, then save the heifer calves and continue developments in breeding. When cows have ailing teeth they will sometimes drop out the food they have raised into the mouth for remastication. Angora goats cannot thrive if crowded into a small space, hence should not be kept in large flocks on small farms. How many dairymen, when comparing cost of feed and the price of milk, forget to estimate the actual cash value of the manure obtained. In many pursuits men may muddle along and make a livelihood, hut to make a real success on the farm a man must have a good head, and use it. When a horse is required to work it should be seen that the animal is in good health and condition, for otherwise no horse can he expected to work properly. In the United Kingdom there are some 34,000,000 acres under grass, apart from mountain grazings, and of this 24,000,000 acres arc grazed and 10,000,000 are cut for hay. Never fill a churn more than one third the quantity it will hold, and always ventilate during churning and let out impure gas, or the churning may be delayed, and may cause sleepy cream. The Danish farmer now does not confine his effort to keeping records of his cows, hut the cow tester also keeps track of the ration that is fed to the growing heifers and to the dry cows. Co-operative ownership of breeding stock has not made much progress in this country. It usually takes two forms, either the purchase and maintenance of « stallion or the acquisition of a hull. It may be a sore teat, it may be an inflamed udder, or it may be that she has been misused, and regards her milker as an enemy that a cow kicks. If such is the case, treat her kindly, and she will soon learn that you are not going to harm her.
