Thoroughgood got the best of the start, leading by two lengths before they had gone a quarter of a mile. The Australian was rowing in Whelch's water, giving him his wash. The race was slow, Thoroughgood doing 2S to Whelch's 32 strokes. Whelch spurted near the mile, but Thoroughgood responding, drew two lengths ahead. The New Zealander spurted again at a mile and a half, and cut the lead down to a length. At two miles and a half Whelch. by a fine effort, pulled almost level, but Thoroughgood easily maintained his lead, and though Wehch made a plucky effort, the Australian had too much in reserve, and spurting a hundred yards from the finish won easily by three lengtns in 20min 35sec.

Thoroughgood said Whelch was the best man he had yet met. The New Zealander was ovationed for his pluck.
