Newcastle Road Board.

The monthly meeting of the above board -was held on Friday at the office, Ohote. Present—Messrs E. C. Shepherd, chairman, H. U. Poynter, R, H. Nicholson, G. Gallagher, and T. Woolfield.

Mr S. Fullerton waited on the board and requested that 100 yds of earthwork and set of pipes be put in on kotokauri road. Granted. Mr Bedford was present in connection with the removal of trees along his road boundary and suggested that only one row of trees be cut down. — The board decided that nothing short ot cutting down all the pine trees along this road would effect much improvement, and the notice sent out was adhered to. —While on this subject the board decided to notify Mr Gaskill and others to remove the pine trees from their road boundaries.

Messrs Sagar and Taylor waited on the board in connection with the suggested new road through Messrs Kay's and Taylor's properties, and handed in a petition from a number of ratepayers, who offered to contribute towards the cost of the work. — Mrs C. Taylor offered to give sufficient land for a road, provided the present road over the hill was closed and given to her in exchange.—The chairman said that the board was in sympathy with the project, and had previously tried to open a road through Mr Kay's property, but without success.—A lengthy discussion ensued, and it was finally decided that the board again endeavour to obtain the consent of Mr Kay and those interested with him in the land to have a road put through. —lt was also decided that the suggested road be run alongside the boundary of Mr Kay's land, and not as hitherto proposed, right through the centre of it.

Mr S. B. Sims, surveyor, notified that his professional services were now available if required. Mr W. H. Soper wrote complaining of the excessive rates charged upon his property, and threatened further inquiry. Mr G. Ellison requested the refund of money advanced by him towards the cost of selling land for rates, and and which the board's solicitor had failed to put through. -Granted. The Tuhikaramea Road Board wrote offering £3 towards the cost of re-forming their portion of Valley road.—The chairman said he had had the work clone with the county road grader. Several small works on the Cemetery road, Te Kowhai road, and Edgecombe's road were authorised.

It was decided to apply for authority to spend the £IOO granted for reforming and gravelling the Pukete road, Mr Gallagher to have the reforming proceeded with at once.

The following tenders were [received for works on l'ukete road:—A. 11. Crawford, earthwork, Is 6d per yard, sanding 2s, Is lid, and Is lOd per yard. IT. Booth, earthwork, Is lid per yard, sanding Is 3d per yard; gravelling Gallagher's hill, 4s 9d per chain. — Accepted. Valley road -Nicholson and Cole, earthwork Is 3d per yard, sanding 3s 3d yard. Accepted.
