WAIKATO v. THAMES. Under the most favourable weather conditions the Waikato represent atives met the chosen of the Thames Association at Parawai on Saturday. The teams took the field as follows: Thames (blue and gold):—Goal: Menzies; full backs: Driver and Hockley; halves: Newman, L. Whittaker and Brokeushire; forwards: Redshaw, Torrens, E. Whittaker, capt; Brownlee and Thompson. Waikato, (green): Goal: Lee; fullbacks: Lucien and Smith; halves, Court, Hooper capt., Brown; for wards: Pomeroy, Mackenzie, Simpson, Rice and Davy. Thames won the toss and played with a slight downhill advantage. Waikato carried play to Thames’ twenty five where a timely shot by Rockley relieved pressure and put Waikato on the defensive. Shortly afterwards the Greens were penalised for sticks, and Thames following up made things warm for a time. After temporary relief Thames again assumed the aggressive and Brownlee hit a hard goal. From the “bully off” Waikato worked their wav up the field and Thames were penalised. From the free hit the Greens swarmed into the Thames circle, but the shot at goal was fruitless. Even play then ensued for a time, when the Thames forwards attacked and E. Whittaker scored the second goal for Thames. Soon afterwards the Thames again scored through Brownlee. Waikato then began to take a hand in things, and made several attempts to equalize the scores when Thames were penalised, and from the penalty bully Thames cleared and half time sounded with mid field play. In the second spell the Thames forwards attacked temporarily, and then Waikato carried the ball to the | Thames twenty five. Shortly afterI wards Thames broke away and E. i Whittaker scored. After the bully off I the Waikato forwards set up a series |of attacks, whiffi ended in Rice ' cleverly beating the Thames defence ' and scoring Waikato’s first goal. 1 For the next ten minutes the play 1 was confined to Thames’ territory, ! and several shots by the Waikato forwards went very near to scoring. The game was a very fast and open one and played in the best of spirit, only being suspended for a minute owing to a slight injury to a Thames back. Each team had the slight advantage cf downhill running for a spell. For the Thames, Brownlee and Whittaker were the best of a good hard \oiking set of forwards. Broken-hire was the best of the hj fives, while lb c'dey :n ! D iver as full Lacki rend'red yeoman service. For Waikato all tne forwards worked splendidly.
