A Startling Story.

A sensational story comes to us from the King Country regarding what appears to have been a savage encounter between Constable Maher and a Taumarunui resident. We are informed that the latter got up a case of whisky by the express on Thursday and proceeded to carry it home in the semi-darkness. He was overtaken by Constable Maher and what acutally happened is by no means certain; but subsequently Maher was found in a shockingly mutilated condition. The report appears to be exaggerated and we will therefore refrain from entering into details; but it is stated that so serious were his injuries that it was thought advisable to take his depositions. Twenty or thirty residents immediately went out in search of his assailant; buc failed to find him. He was subsequently arrested by the Raurimu constable while asleep near Tcringamutu.
