Hamilton Borough Council.

A meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held last evening- There were present—His Worship the Mayor, Mr J. S. Bond, and Crs. Fow, MacDiarmid, Young, Tidd, Davis and Mason. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. Allen Bell, and an apology was received from Cr. Roche. —Municipal Conference.— Mr H. J. Greenslade notified the council that he would be pleased to act as their representative at the Municipal Conference. —Received. —Fleet Holidays.— The secretary of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce wrote stal ing that the chamber recommended the proclamation of a holiday from 5.30 p.m. on Saturday, August Bth, till Tuesday morning, 11th. —It was decided to agree to the proposal regarding Monday, but the Mayor stated that the council had no jurisdiction as far as Saturday night was concerned.

—Band Contest— The secretary of the Hamilton Band Contest Committee applied for the use of the Horse Bazaar on October Bth, 9th, and 10th, and asking the council to make provision for seating accommodation.—The Mayor suggested that it would be advisable for the council to seriously consider the question of lighting and seating accommodation, and a committee consisting of the Mayor and Crs. Davia, Fow, and Mason was set up to deal with the matter. —Bridge Commission. — Mr J. E. Fulton, engineer, forwarde 1 his account for attending the bridge commission held in Hamilton, totalling £43 17s.—Decided to pay the amount subject to the borough solicitor's approval. ? —Leases to Lapse..— On behalf of the executors of the late Mr H. S. Hardley, Mr MacDairmid asked to have allotments 364 and 414, Hamilton East, struck off the rate roll, as they had been unoccupied for 18 months.—Agreed to. —Valuation of the Borough.— The Valuer-General informed the council that the District Valuer, Mr Hyde, would be unable to undertake a revision of the Hamilton Borough valuation this year. -Letter received.

Oregon Pine. — A resolution was received from the ' Mayor of Greymouth objecting to the importation of Oregon pine.—On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Davis, the letter was received. —Transfers. — Mr D. Fry wrote applying for a transfer of the borough lease of subsection 4of section 405 to Mr T. McGloin. —Transfer granted; but the matter of subdivision was referred to the endowments committee for their report. Similar application were also received from Mr J. H. Wright and H. S. Bates in respect of lot 17, Hamilton West; and Arthur Hope and Mrs M. A. Pearson, sections 321 and 326, Hamilton E. Mr W. F. Hardley made a gimii'ai application in respect of allotment 210, Hamilton East, to Messrs Guthridge and Pocock.—Granted. —lnvitation. An invitation from the Hamilton Rifle Cadets for their concert on Wednesday, August sth, was received with thanks. —Milk Supply.— Inspector Bennett wrote suggesting that the milk supply of Hamilton should be put on a proper footing and under proper control, and that a municipal depot should be established. Dr. Purdy added a footnote stating that the borough might be able to get milk in bottles from the State Farm, as is done in Wellington.—Referred to the legal and finance committee, who will confer with Inspector Bennett. —Water Supply.— The Mephan-Ferguson Steel Pipe Company inquired if the council would entertain a tender from them for pipes and fittings for the water works. —This was referred to the engineer to call for tenders if a suitable pipe is manufactured by the company. —Footpath. — Mr R. Dillicar complained of the unsatisfactory condition of the pathway fronting his property. —Granted on the usual terms. The applicant to be informed that the council had no intention to interfere with the line of fence. —Damages.— Mrs V. 11. Bosworth applied for i payment of £ls for damages done to i a barberry hedge which was taken out | m connection with the drainage operations.—Referred to the mayor and engineer for their report. Fees.— Mr E. Breckon wrote offering £1 for the trees on the north side of the | approach to the traffic bridge.—This offer was declined. —Drainage.— It was decided to take a poll of the j ratepayers in connection with the i proposal to borrow £2754 for the drainage of storm water in Hamilton West. —The Mayor suggested that the questions of municipal chambers and swimming baths might be considered at the same time. —Collingwood-street.— The engineer was authorised Jto have plans prepared for forming, metalling, kerbing, and channelling Collingwood-street.
