Chapman, who attended the recent Labour Conference at Christchurch, in referring to that gathering, spoke of a proposal at the Conference that the State should provide work for all who desired it, and said that this could be done by a system of State nationalisation. Next came a denunciation of the attitude of the Ward Government towards the Labour party. It was a good thing the Government was showing its hand.

Interruptions continued, and a scuffle occurred, and a voice was then heard gladly acclaiming that someone had "got it" in the nose.
