We are pleased to hear that Miss Austen, a member of the nursing staff of the Waikato Hospital, has been successful in passing her examination in the junior division. At the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday last Mr H. E. Tristram's Eureka ' appropriated the President's Handicap of 100 sovs in splendid style, winning by 20 lengths and beating a field of ten. We congratulate Mr Tristram on his success, as a win for him has been long overdue.

A man named Henry Thomas Lowes Griffin, of Whangarei, and formerly of Dunedin, was taken seriously ill at a boarding-house last evening. Doctors treated the patient for strychnine poisoning, of which he showed symptoms, and he was then removed to the hospital, where he lies in a very critical condition.

At the Waverley saleyards a pen of ewes and a few lambs were bought by a dairyman during the winter, when feed was scarce, for 3s each. They improved wonderfully, grew a good fleece, and have now been sold for 17s 4d each, lambs in. These numbered only about forty. Still, it was a nice little deal for the second owner. As will be seen from the handicaps published in this issue, splendid entries .have been received for the Waikato Trotting Club's first meeting to ba held on Claudelands on Wednesday, 15th inst. The committee are making every preparation to ensure a succesful meeting. A large attendance of racing men from Auckland is expected, and arrangements are in progress to get the express train to stop at Claudelands on that day. Footballers in Hamilton, and especially the Suburbs Club, will be sorry to learn of the departure of Mr Hugh Prince from amongst them, he having secured a lucrative appointment with Mr Blaikie, blacksmith of Pukekohe. As a three-quarter back, "Hugtaie" was at the top of the tree in his profession, he having rendered good service to his club in cup matches, while he also represented Waikato against Auckland, the last two season?. He was also a good cricketer and a smart pedestrian, he having won his fame in more than one rr.ee on Steele Park. He will be greatly missed in local athletic circles and his many friends will wish him every luck in his new home.
