Hamilton Road Works.

The following report which was submitted to the Hamilton Borough Counicl on Friday evening last by the Engineer will he considered at an adjourned meeting to be held this evening:—As instructed at the last meeting I beg to report that the list of works in hand and under my supervision is as follows: Completion of drainage scheme No 2; laying 4 inch main and connecting up services in Collingwoodand Ulster streets; Clyde street formation contract; Ward, Selkirk and Victoria streets contracts, almost completed; metalling Ohaupo road and recent formation in Victoria street; this work is being done as weather permits; formation of Albert street, Hamilton East, west of Grey street. Work not yet undertaken: Alexandra street formation; Garden Place, formation; Victoria street re-grading, keeping and channelling. Plans in preparation and surveys in hand: formation of Selkirk street, north of London street; formation of Willoughby, Mill and Abbotsford street; Ulster street footpaths, grading and extension; Jersey street regrading; Claremount and Lower Mount streets formation, report on Stormwater drainage part of Hamilton West. Pirvate drainage connections Mrs Cusscn’s property, Victoria street. Works authorised but plans not yet prepared; Urinals Garden Place and Kaleyards; extension of pumping plant and waterworks reticulation; private connection to No 1 drainage scheme: survey Clyde street deviation, Hamilton East; re pairs to Galloway street culvert. Li the absence of a steam roller it. would “be expensive and inadvisable for several reasons to undertake the work of tarring and sanding the carriage way of Victoria street until the traffic has thoroughly bonded and consolidated the metal to an even surface. This would probably be six months after the street has been graded and metalled full width as proposed. The estimated cost of treating that portion of the street from the railway line to the traffic bridge would be £270, and it would be necessary to do the work annually. I cannot recommend the proposal to erect a urinal in Clyde street, as without a system of water flushing, the place instead of being a convenience, would in a short time become a nuisance and dangerous to health. The contractor for the formation of Clyde street has made good progress considering the wet weather during the past month. He should finish the earth work next week. The soft condition of the formation has prevented Messrs Lovett and Tucker from completing the Ward and Selkirk streets contracts. The contract for concrete kerbing and channelling in Victoria street is practically finished and 1 have certified to a progress payment of 7-5 per cent, of the contract amount. The wet and loose nature of the ground being encountered in section Ml2 is retarding the progress with No 2 drainage works, 130 feet of concrete pipes have been laid and the site for the septic tank is being excavated. L'lso feet of 4in. water mains have been laid in Collingwood street and Milton street, the mains in Anglesea street and Thackeray street being connected up. The work of private service connections will shortly be undertaken. The continuous wet weather, heavy traffic and cutting up the streets for drainage, waterworks and gasworks, have combined in causing many of the streets to liecome in a bad condition. Repairs have been effected and general maintenance work done in the following streets:--Government Farm road, Grey, Thackeray, Collingwood, Victoria and London streets and Ohaupo Road. The Hindi pipes have been laid in Williamson’s drain and Cook street, as authorised. The water trough in Bridge street, Hamilton East, is past repair and I would suggest that it, would be replaced with the present trough near Storcr’s factory, Victoria street, and that a new trough be erected on the opposite side of Victoria street at the northern corner of Alma street, also that a trough be erected at the new sale-yards. As it will be necessary to lay a sewer in Ward street to drain the Horse Bazaar, J would recommend that the work be done before the street is metalled, and that lenders be invited for the work. This work is not included in the drainage scheme, but as the sewer will be of service to the sections fronting Ward street, the cost would be a fair charge to the drainage account. 1 beg to recommend that the western side of this street be fenced and the existing fences removed preparatory to the work of formation. Rians for the regrading and for million of Jersey, Ulster, Willoughby, Selkirk, Abbotsford, Charlemont and Lower Mount streets are now well in hand and will be submitted to the Council as soon as possible, so that work in the bade streets can be put in hand early in the spring.
