FEDERAL ELECTIONS. Sydney, December 13 Later returns only give a partial view of the elections, but there are indications that the Commonwealth has not broken away from the threeparty system, although, if anything, there has probably been a weakening of Mr Deakin’s following, and a corresponding strengthening of than of Mr Watson and Mr Reid. The latter was given a ran for East Sydney by a comparatively unknown man, who got within 1200 of the Opposition leader. During the election all the hotels were closed, and the police record is rather remarkable, not a single arrest having been effected within the metropolitan area np to midnight. An extraordinary factor is the number of electors who did nob vote, and in several constituencies less than fifty per cent, went to the poll. None of the leaders have expressed opinions, owing to the incompleteness of the returns. The Sydney Morning Herald displays disappointment at the result, and says that New South Wales has not given the decisive vote it should have done. Mr Ewing, Mr Groom, and Mr Chapman have been returned to the Senate; in fact, all the Ministers are safe with the exception of Mr Playford, who is the bottom of the poll for the Senate for South Australia. Three Labour candidates were 12,000 ahead of Mr Playford. Mr Irvine, formerly State Premier of Victoria, has been returned to the House of Representatives tor South Australia, and that colony returns only this one new member, who replaces Sir Langdon Bonython (retired). In Western, Australia there is no change likely. . There seems to be no chance of the restoration of the two party system, except by the fusion of elements that now appear to be irreconcilable. The state of the parties, according to the latest figures, is as follows: For the Senate^ — Anti-Socialists* ... ... 13 Labour Socialists ... 5 Ministerialists ... ... 0 In the House of Representatives the figures are— Anti-Socialists 32 Labour Socialists ... 26 Ministerialists ... ... 17 Labour won six seats in New South Wales.
