HUNTLY.

The most important item of news in circulation in the township is that, after boring operations which have been prosecuted near Lake Waahi for several months, the Taupiri West Coal Company, Ltd., struck coal on Tuesday last at a depth of over 150 ft. The thickness of the seam or seams gone through has not been divulged, though it is reported that they are most encouraging. It is also confidently asserted that Mr J. J. Craig, of Auckland, who has bought out the “ working shareholders,” has obtained the preponderating interest in the company, of which several of the late shareholders are now employees. A native belonging to the Matahura district was brought before Mr C. Richards, J.P., in answer to a charge of attempting to utter a cheque to the bottom of which the name of Mr Grant, of Matahura, had been forged. The native was remanded to the S.M. Court, which sits in Huntly next week. The programme of the concert which takes place on the evening of Friday next, in aid of the funds of S. Anthony’s (Catholic) Church, has been issued. With the bill of fare provided and the extensive preparations being made by the committee, a bumper house should result. The Taupiri South Mine (Bennett’s), which is under the management of Mr James Duncan, is now in a position to place on the market a limited supply of coal which, though somewhat bluish in appearance, is said to burn very well. For some months this mine’s output has been nil, the energies of the management being entirely engaged on the work of development.—(Own Correspondent.)
