HAMILTON ROWING CLUB

A committee meeting of the above club was held last evening in Mr J. McKee’s ollice, Hood-street, when there was a good attendance. Mr N. C. Matthew (captain) was in the chair. The secretary reported that the new gig had arrived from Wellington in good order and condition. Owing to a technical error in the instructions, the stroke outrigger had been placed on the wrong side, but in the opinion of an expert this could easily be rectified. The total cost of boat, including oars, wharfage fees, steamer and railway freight is .£4-1 Gs Sd, which leaves a substantial credit balance of the separate account, for building the new shed.

A cheque was passed for payment to Mr F. Norton, of Wellington, the builder of the new boat.

The secretary was instructed to write to the Waitemata Rowing Club thanking thorn for their kind action in receiving the gig at Auckland and putting her on the truck for Hamilton. After some discussion, the matter of holding the club’s picnic or “ at home” about Easter Monday was left in abeyance.

It was decided to have the name of the winning crews engraved upon Mrs Bright’s and Mr Howden’s silver challenge cups. The former is to be rowed for on Saturday next, February 3rd, and the latter to bo presented to Mr Empsou, the stroke of the “Abbotsford ” boarding-house crew, at the shed on the same day.

The chairman stated that Mr Hurdwood had off ered to donate £5 5s towards the river scheme as soon as a start was made with the building of the shed. A unanimous vote of thanks was passed to Mr Hardwood for his generous offer.

It was resolved to charge an entrance fee of Is for all events to be rowed on Saturday next.

Mr Fairer was appointed judge, and the Rev. N. C. W. Radcliffe and Mr F. Atkins starters in connection with the trial fours and pair-oar races which are to take place on Saturday, February 3rd. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs N. C. Matthew, 0. H. Holloway, H. Edgecumbe and P. Swarbrick were deputed to mark off the course, and Mr Elliott (iu the absence ot the secretary owing to stress of business) to supervise matters generally. It was arranged to have systematic working bees for the purpose of erecting the new shed on the river bank, and the work will be taken in band at once. Mr Burgess, architect, kindly offered to inspect the work whilst the shed is iu course of construction, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to him lor his kiuduess.

A letter was received from the police in reference to the destruction of the club’s property by certain individuals, in which it was suggested that the club should- make an example of the first offender caught tampering with its property as the only means of stamping out the nuisance.—it was decided to take the police’s advice in the matter.
