FOOTBALL.

HAMILTON RUGBY UNION

The match on Saturday between the No. 1 and Suburbs teams (seniors) was stubbornly contested by both sides. In the first spell Suburbs had slightly the best of the game, the forwards playing well together, Hart and Coates (2) being especially prominent; but they were unable to cross their opponents’ line, the defence of Hughes and Bike on the No. 1 side being very solid. No score resulted in the first spell, although Hughes went very near landing a goal for his side from a mark, the ball just going outside the post. In the second half both sides livened up to their work, some good passing runs being witnessed amongst the backs. Pike, Hughes and Devery being conspicuous for No. 1, and Tui and Prince for Suburbs, but neither side managed to score. A good deal of uninteresting line play followed, and from a throw-in Harwood secured possession and made a grand opening for his side; but the forwards kicked too hard when near the lino, and a force resulted. Play was again quickly transferred to Suburbs’ 25, where the ball remained for some time, scrum following scrum. Time was now rapidly drawing to a elos’o, and it looked as though the match would end in a draw; but from a serum right in front of the Suburbs’ goal the ball was shot out to Pike and he raced over the line and scored the winning try for No. 1. Hughes failed in the attempt to converi., and the bell rang immediately after, leaving No. 1 winners by three points (a try) to nil. A. Hope, who was playing a good game as wing threequarter for Suburbs, got a nasty kick under the eye just before the close of the first spell, and he had to retire. No. 1 kindly allowed a substitute to take his place. Hughes played a sterling game for the winners, as also did Callaghan for the losers. Air E. Williamson gave every satisfaction as referee, and Messrs Taylor and Tuck acted as linesmen. Junior Com risttiton. The junior match between No. I and Suburbs was a well-contested game, the former winning by 0 points (two trios) to li (one try). Air G. Mayes controlled the game in an efficient manner. WAIKATO RUGBY UNION. The only match played under this Union on Saturday was that between Whatawhata and Huntly at Ngaruawahia, the first-named team winning by three points (a try scored by Speedy) to nil. Mr li. Johnson was referee. CAMBRIDGE RUGBY UNION. The junior teams of Cambridge City and Suburbs tried conclusions on Victoria Square on Saturday, when, after a very tough fight, the latter proved victorious by three points to nil. AUCKLAND MATCHES. ASSOCIATION MATCH. NEW ZEALAND V. SYDNEY, (Received Juno 17, 8.15 p.m.) Sydney, June 17. The Association game between New Zealand and Sydney was played in fine weather and in the presence of 20,000 spectators. In the first half Sydney scored three goals to New Zealand’s two. There was no score in the second spell, and the game ended as mentioned. The visitors lacked combination and relied too much upon kicking. Brown and Chadwick scored for the visitors.
