It is with regret we announce the decease of Laura, the youngest daughter of Mr James Anderson, of Pukcrimu. She was a groat sufferer for over a year prior to the death, and she was a great favourite with a large circle of friends, who mourn her loss. We heartily sympathise with the family in their untimely loss. Deceased was only 21 years of age.

The ,‘inmiiil examination in con nection with the national scholarships is being conducted at the Hamilton East School, where Mr C. J. W. Barton is acting as supervisor. There are in nil 16 local candidates.

The Commissioner d Police (Air Diunie), accompanied by Inspector Cullen, chief of the Auckland police, is at present on a tour of inspection of the police stations throughout the Waikato and King Country districts. The visit will extend over several days.

A lad named Win, O’Donnell, about 15 years of age, living near Otorohauga, met with a nasty accident through jumping on a hill hook, by which his foot was severely cut. He was admitted to the Waikato Hospital yesterday afternoon, when it was found necessary to amputate Iris big toe. The Makarini Scholarships exammation was begun yesterday in Jluntly. There is only one candidate sitting, Huia Randell, a pupil of the Rakaumanga native school, whore he has been under the tuition of Mr A. Wilson. Mr Elliott, at the request of the Education Department, is acting as supervisor.

Mr Clement Wragge (formerly meteorologist for the Queensland Government) and Airs Wragge were passengers by the Oorinthic, which left Wellington for London last Friday. It is to be hoped that with the departure of Mr Wragge the spell of unseasonable weather which he so truly predicted some mouths back will come to an cud.

The Cambridge Dramatic Company will produce the striking drama “The Two Vagabonds” in the Public Hall, Te Awamutu, this evening, and at Hamilton on the 21st inst. The company have been most successful in the production of this piece, and playgoers may anticipate a very pleasant evening’s entertainment.

The Taupiri Extended mine at Huntly will be closed down for some time, in order that a new screening plant may bo erected, and the miners employed there have received their notice to leave. It is expected that the majority of them will be accommodated with work at Ralph’s or at Kimihia. It is anticipated that the erection of the plant will take some three months.

On Sunday morning Motorman Bach, an employee of the Auckland Iramways Company, was presented with a handsome gold watch and chain which was subscribed to by the admirers of his promptness and presence of mind on a recent occasion when he rescued a little girl from being run over in Kyber Pass by reaching over the front of the car and drawing her up on to the platform.

Last evening the members of the committee of tue Hamilton Rowing Club presented Mr J. McKee with a smokers’ companion as an evidence of their appreciation of his kindness to the club since its inauguration. The presentation was made by the captain, Mr. N. O. Alatthew, in a neat little speech appropriate to the occasion, to which Mr McKee suitably replied thanking the donors.

At a meeting of the committee of the Hamilton Boxing-Day sports last evening it was decided to postpone the date for receiving entries until Monday next, I‘Jth inst. The secretary reported that he had received a donation from Messrs L. I). Nathan and Co. and a trophy from Air J. 6. Bond, while Air Chamberlain offered to supply the logs for the chopping competition. A vote of thanks was passed to these gentlemen for their kindness.

About 4 o’clock ou Sunday morning a constable discovered that an attempt had been made to perpetrate an extensive burglary on the premises of Mr W. Winn, grocer, Karangahaperoad, Auckland, Finding the front door open, an examination of the premises showed that goods to the weight of about 6cwt, worth about £2O, had been gathered together for removal, but the burglars had apparently been disturbed without being able to take anything with them.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., commenced their annual horse fair at the Hamilton yards this morning at 10.30. There was a good attendance of the public, and trading opened briskly. The unbroken stock were greatly, admired, a very fine range in the different classes being offered. The sale will be continued this afternoon, when the Auckland and reserved horses will be brought forward, and also to-morrow, commencing at 9 o'clock.

Ou Saturday next a very pleasant afternoon’s amusement may be obtained by visiting the Hamilton Lake, where a number of competitions will be held by the local Rowing Club. These include trial fours, pair oar race, and ladies’ race. For the first-named event four crews have been entered, and active training has been in progress for some time under the Rev. N, C. W. Radclili'e. The prize is the challenge cup presented by Mrs J. W. H. Bright, while the winners will receive medals presented by four members of the committee. The second prizes, four biscuit barrels, have been presented by Capt. Matthew. During the afternoon Mr Davidson will give an exhibition of fancy swimming and diving. Proceedings will commence at 2 p.m„ and no charge for admission will be made. We have been asked to notify that keys of the shed are now obtainable from Mr W. H, Paul, stationer, or the secretary of the club (Mr (J. Horsnell) at Is each.
