THE PREMIER.
(BY TELKGRArit—I'KESS ASSOCIATION) CinusTCKDKCH, Last Night. Jilt Seddon, speaking at Culverden yesterday, stated that the Government had bought 31,000 acres <>f the Highßeld estate in North Canterbury at a price well within the valuer's figures. 'I he purchase had given general satisfaction, and the estate would be cut up and offered for settlement as soon as possible. Somo time ago the Parnassus estate, north of Waiau River, was offered to the Government. Mr Seddon had already seen the estate from the Cheviot side, but on Wednesday he drove through from Mendip Hill to Waiau, and saw the back of the estate. He liked the land much better on the Mendip side than on the Cheviot side. It contained good country, and it. is probable the Government will purchase Culverden. The inspector for the Society for the Preveutiou of Cruelty to Animals had an interview with tho Premier on the question of a subsidy. The Premier asked him to have a full statement of the matter sent him, and he would give it consideration. He con'idered the objects of the society of a most worthy character, and would be prepared to give tho present request due consideration. Mr Seddon returned to Lesliehills last night, and will jouruey 'o Hamr.er Springs to-dny.
