CHESS MATCH.
The match between the Auckland and Waikato players was concluded on Saturday evening last. Play commenced at 7 p.m., and at 12 o'clock, when the men were boxed, nearly all the- games had been decided. The first to score was Mr Bertram for Waikato, soon followed by Mr Germann on, the same side, and Messrs Ashton, Sloman and Green for Auckland. Several of the other games were drawn. The last game decided was between the Auckland champion (Mr Grierson) at board 1 and Mr Jourdain (Waikato). This was from, the start a very tough fiaht, the Waikato player giving a gambit for the attack which he held throughout an interesting game, fairly outplaying his opponent, who resigned on the 37th move. It speaks well for the country players that at none of the first six boards, where they naturally expected to be outclassed, did they suffer a loss. Two clerical errors occurred which affected a couple of the games, but apart from these nothing happened lo mar the pleasure of the match. The telegraph arrangements were admirable, and the operators, Messrs Comesky (Auckland), Roche (Hamilton), and G. Vause (Te Awamutu), are to be congratulated on the good work performed.
