HAMILON STOCK MARKET. •At the monthly sale held in the Hamilton Borough Yards yesterday, a large number of stock were brought forward, including about 150 head of fat cattle, mostly steers. Competition for beef was good/nearly everything selling under the hammer, the top price for steers, £9 10s each being obtained for a pair of bullocks fattened by Messrs Ewen Bros., Tamahere, Mr Jos. Barugh getting up to £6 15s for well-fatted cows. Store cattle were in moderate number and in brisk : demand with the exception of young 'cattle, which experienced a slight drop. * The dairy pens were fairly filled, about 40 cows being offered, all good sorts selling at from £5 to £5 15s; aged animals dull of sale. The sheep pens were rilled with a goodclasslof fat sheep, in wool ■ and shorn. Bidding was brisk and few . pens were passed. Pigs were in full numbers and fair enquiry, values being ' unchangod. Before the opening several * ! draught stallions were paraded, among them being Better Times, Chancellor and Braemar, also Mr F. Marshall's roadster stallion Merryboy, who was in the pink of .conditioa and generally admired. Prices were : Yearling cattle fram 20s to 265; 'good sorts, 283 to 325; 18 months steers, £2 to £2 18s; 18 months heifers, £1 15s to £27s 6d ; two-year-old heifers, £2 5s to £2 17s 6d ; two-year-old steers, • £3 10s to £4 14s ; empty cow, £2 2s to £3 8s; Shorthorn bulls, yearlings, £4 15s : A '■■' to £5; grown, £3 to £4 ; fat steers, £5 15s to £9 10s : tat cows, £4 17s 6d to £6 15s; dairy, cows, from £2 17s 6d to £5 15s ; good cows, £4 10s to £5 19s. Sheep: Fat wethers, 16s to 16s 9d; fat ewes, 14s 7d to 16 6d ; shorn sheep, 13s. Cattle: At the Newmarket Yards on Tuesday tat stock "','; was penned in average numbers, and 'met a brisk sale at improved rates. Oxen sold at from 20s to 23s per 1001 b ; ' cow, 17s to 395; fat steers sold at from £6 2s 6d to £lO 10s; cows, £ 15s to £7 ': 12s 6d. A draugho of 20 from Mr Allen Bent, Waiuku, averaged £9 17s. Dairy ' cows were yarded in full numbers and sold at from £3 10s to £6 12s 6d. Sheep were yarded in barely average numbers / 'on Tuesday, aud competition was very keen. Wethers sold at from 13s 9d to 23s 3d ; ewes, 12s 9d to 19s 9d. A draft of 112 Waikato wethers averaged 225, auother smaller draft from the same din- .',. trict brought 21s ; spring lambs, yarded in full numbers, sold at from Ss 6d to 13s 9d. Pigs in full supply, porkers sold at from 17s to 35s ; weaners, 7s to 14s 6d. The cattle fair held at Papakura on Monday was one oi the most successful sales held for many years, buyers being represented from Taranaki, Waikato, Tauranga, Waiuku and all the surrounding distiicts. We yarded upwarded of 3,000 head and cleared the lot, almost without exception. Without doubt, a finer lot of cattle, as regards both breeding quality and condition, could not have been yarded, showing that , .the settlers are taking greater care to improve their herds, and thereby getting better prices. Grown steers sold at from £5 Pis to £7 63; three to four-year-old bullocks, £4 5s to £5 12s 6(1; two to three-year old bullocks, £3 to £4 7s 6d ; yearlings, £2 to £2 18s ; empty cows in ;■'■'. ' forward coudition, £2 18s to £4 14s; heifers, £2 to £3 6<. At the anuual sale at Papakura on Wednesday there was again a large muster aud dairy stock predominated. Dairy cows sold at from £3 10s to £6 12s 6(1 ; fat cows, £4 5s to £5 17s 6d ; fat steers, up to £7 ; other store stock sold at Monday's rates. Hides, Skins, Tallow, etc. : On Tuesday at our weekly sale we offered a large and representative catalogue to a full attendance of buyers. Competition was good throughout, with an all round advance in prices. Sales were as follows :—Hides, picked ox, B|d ; prime, s|d to 6fd ; heavy stout, 5d to s£d; light and medium, 3|d to 4fd; cow, 3-jd to 3Jd ; kip. 3d to 4d; calf, 4d to s|d ; stag, 2d to 3M per lb ; skins, largo, 3s 9d to 4a 7d ; "small and medium, 2s 3d to 2s fid each; tallow, lfis to 19s 9d per cwt.; tails, 2s Id dozen. Maize : Ib selling on the wharf at 2s 4|d per bushel for wholesale lines. Oats: Are easier, being quoted at 2s per bushel on wharf for large lots. Potatoes: In short supply, are worth £2 15s per ton. Chaff : Is offering at rail for £2 15s per ton.
