NEWCASTLE ROAD BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the above Board was held at the office, Ohote, on Wednesday. Present: Messrs Corboy (Chairman), Bycroft, Nicholson, Washer and Shepherd.

Valuation.—A. commuoication was received from the Valuer-General, stating that the valuation of Mr Geo. Hall's property, at Pukete, had beeu increased from £B7O to £11*25, and requesting that the alteration be made in the roll.—The opinion of the Board seetmd to be unfavourable to the new system of valuation, whereby any settler was liable to have ajtemtions made at any time in the rateable value of his property, and the Chairman was requested to look into the matter and ascertain the Board's position. In the meantime the application was deftrred. As some doubt had existed among members of the Board respecting the necessity of appointing a treasurer, as well as clerk, the Ohuirrnan read clauses of the Act showing that such an official was not required. Roll.—Mr H. U. Poynter nquested that Mrs Poynter's uame be placed on the roll for Section 12'2a., Pukete.— Granted. Cokkhspondknce. A memo, was received from the LanJs Department re new roads at Horotiu and Pukete.— From the Valuer General, decliniug to allow any division in ihe assessment of Messrs Fullerton Bios', property.—Mrs Thoa Rothwell, junr., requested that her name be removal from the roll for Section 136, Pukete, and that of Mr Rothwell be put in place of it.— Granted.

Te Kowhai Creamery Road.—Mr Nicholson r ported tint owing to the Opposition of Mr Peter Kay, the application made'at the last nneting by Mes?rs Hunt and Bycroft, would be withdrawn. —After some discussion, it was decided to obtain from Mr Spragg a better title to the land now being a road near the Te Kowhai creamery, and improve the present road into the district. The Late Rate Case—No explanation h iving been received from Mr R. W. Dyer (the Board's solicitor) re the McCutcheon ose, the Clerk was directed to remind him ot the omission. .

Pekkins' Bridge.—The Chairman reported hiving made an estimate of the cost of the proposed bridge, which —on the smallest scale to be of any usewould amount to £SO, any earthwoiks would bo in addition. Mr Teikius waited on the lio'id and offered to Contribute towards the cost of the work. —lt was decided that tho Chairman draw up a list of the most urgent works reouired in vatioii3 parts of the district, also an estimate of the funds available for the ensuing year, and report at the next meeting, when the whole question will be dealt with. Phaser's Cpttwg, Te Kowhai—The Chairman reported that some damage had beru caused to Mr Wyman's land owing to Bfiiid being taken by road contractors from the wrong place.—The clerk wis directed to notify the contractor to repair the daniagt forthwith.

Ratimj on Unimproved Value.—The cleik was directed to ascertain from Mr Lang, M.H.R , what has been done in Parliament respecting this important measure.
