AUCKLAND NEWS.
(by telegraph—press association.) Auckland, Last Nighb. At Ellerslie, this morning, Sou'wester, a chestnut mare, owned by Dr. Bewes, of Otahuhu, was being schooled over tins hurdles in company with Hylas and Thelma, when the first named struck the obstacle, falling and breaking her neck. Renzie Walker, who was riding the mare, escaped with a ahaking. Wm. Sherman was committed for trial on a charge of the theft of a purse containing £7,'from a cab. Mr J. Stevenson, who has recently re» signed his position as stationmaster, at Auckland, under circumstances, previously telegraphed, was presented with a handsome gold match, chain and pendant by the members of the railway staff. A beautifully illuminated address was presented from the Railway Officers' Institute, of which he was President.
