FOOTBALL

WAINGARO V. OHAUrOs The football match, Waingaro v. Ohaupo, which should have been played on June 18th, was played on Sydney Square, Hamilton, on Saturday last The teams were composed as fo'lows : Waingaro : (though why it should be this named is hard to understand, since there is scarcely a Waingaro man in the team). Full-buck Gillander ; threequarters Terawhiti, Hinton and Paynter ; five-eight—Bailey ; half-back —Young ; forwards—Goodwin, Skelton, Henderson, Mcßuruey, Marshall, Roper, Isaac and Carlston. Ohaupo : Full-back —Joe. Prince ; three-quarters—Honie, B. Park and Johnson ; five-eight—B Bright ; half—S. Park ; wings—W. and J. Park ; forwards—Turnwald (2), Wilson, Cowpcr. Cowley, W. Williams and Chapman. The game created little or no interest in Hamilton, owing to the fact that the Morrinsville v. Hamilton 11. match was going on at the same time at the other side of the paddock, and the latter game furnished the greater attraction in the shape of exciting play. The Ohaupo-Waingaro match was chiefly confined to the forwards, and play was of a most even nature. The game opened with some give-and-take scrum work about midfield. Slowly the Ohaupo forwards approached their opponents' goalline, and rushing over the line compelled them to force. Waingaro replied with a capital rush, the ball being carried over the Ohaupo line, and Marshall, who was in the lead, scored the first try. The angle was a very difficult one, and the kick at goal added no points to the total. Then just towards the close of the spell, Carlston headed a brilliant rush by the Waingaro forwards, and obtained try No. 2, which also remained unconverted. The first spell ended—Waingaro, 6 ; Ohaupo, 0. In the second portion of the game Ohaupo made a much better fight of it, and had much the best of the play. One of the forwards, Wilson (a Maori) got away with the ball, and scored the only try "for his side, after making a good run. The game ended—Waingaro, 6 ; Ohaupo, 3. Mr E. Williamson made a most efficient referee, and his decisions in every instance were accepted without a murmur. This is the final match of the first round. HAMILTON 11. V MORRINSVILLE. The return match between the above clubs was played on No. 2 ground, Sydney Square, on Saturday last, and resulted in a win for Hamilton by 10 points (two tries converted) to 3 (1 try). The Morrinsville team, who were by far the heavier set, had a little the best of the first spell, but no score was registered on either side. Shortly after the second spell started Clarke scored a try for Morrinsville, but no goal resulted. The Hamilton boys now rallied, and Pyke picking up neatly made a gTand run right through, scoring behind the posts. W. Evans kicked a nice goal. The game now became interesting, Morrinsville making great efforts to score, but the Hamilton boys were not to be denied, and from a good dribbling rush, in which Harwood, Holloway and Johnston were prominent, the latter fcored. W. Evans agaiu ! added the major points Time was now called, the game ending as above. Mr C. Speight acted as referee, and Messrs Harrison and Peacock were the line umpires. In tha evening the visitors were entertained at a smoke concert at the Commercial Hotel, and a very pleasant evening was spent by all present. OTOROHANGA V. I'ATERANOI. The Otorohanga and Paterangi footballers met together on neutral grouud in the Kihikihi Domain on Saturday last. Both teams seemed in good form, and none the worse for their long lide. A good game, in which Otorohanga seemed at first to have the advantage, as they obtaiued 5 points before Paterangi was able to score, finally resulted in a victory for the Paterangi boys by 9 points to 5. WAIPA RUGBY" UNION. A meeting of the Waipa Rugby Union was held at Te Awamutu last Saturday evening. There was a splendid attendance of members present, all the four contesting clubs—Te Awamutu, Paterangi, Kihikihi and Otorohanga—being well represented, there being between 30 and 40 footballers present, besides the delegates. The whole business in connection with our nourishing little Union was well gone into. A reply was received from the Waikato Union, accepting the challenge for a Waipa v. Waikato mateli at Hamilton on the 16th July. The following fixtures were arranged for the second round of cup matches for the Waipa Union -.—July 9th : ' A ' team v.
