TE AWAMUTU.
Mutual Improvement Society. A meeting of those interested in the formation of a Mutual Improvement Society at Te Awamutu and the surrounding district was held in the library readingroom on Thursday evening last. The attendance was not very large. The meeting was presided over by Mr James Mandeno. After some little discussion, a resolution was passed in favour of forming a society. The following were elected as office bearers President : Mr James Cottrell. Vice-Presidents : Rev. J. Kayll, Rev. Smith and Rev. Dr, Hosking. Committee : Messrs S. Lewis, J. Culver, U. Chester, G. Pcckham and C. Bowden. Secretary :Mr Pi. Reid. Treasurer : MrC. A. Taylor.—MrVause proposed that ladies be invited to join the Society.—This was seconded by Mr Culver and carried. The members’ subscription was fixed at tls for gentlemen and Is for ladies. A meeting takes place on Thursday, for the purpose of drawing up rules, etc. Departure.— l regret having to report that our popular and obliging creamery manager, Mr C. Barker, has received notice from the Dairy Association to proceed to the charge of the creamery at Mercer. This has caused much disappointment to all the suppliers, with, perhaps, the exception of one or two. A petition is now being numerously signed by suppliers and others, asking the Association to allow Mr Barker to remain. Mr Barker has now been five and a half years with us, and has given every satisfaction, and is most obliging to the suppliers, During all of the last season, when the daily supply was very large, Mr Barker did the whole of the work single-handed, and only had one break-down that caused any inconvenience. All are in hopes that the Association will grant their request. Shifting with a large family, means some considerable expense to Mr Barker.—(Own Correspondent.)
