DEATH OF MR R. KIRKWOOD,
It is with very great regret that we have to announce the death of Mr Robert Kirk wood, which took place on Sunday afternoon at his residence, Cambridge. Deceased had been in failing health for some time, the dire disease cancer having developed in his system. Mr Kirk wood was a very old resident of Cambridge, having settled in that township about 1565, when he joined his brother (Mr John Kirkwood) in a store, which was situated near the old wharf. He shortly afterwards built the Alpha Hotel, now known as the National, which he conducted for some years, and eventually sola the property to Mr Hally. He then conducted the Duke of Cambridge Hotel for some yean!. During his occupation of this hotel he built the fine house opposite, which is known as the Sanatorium. During his career the deceased took an active part in local public affairs, having been a member of the Waikato County Council, the Cambridge Borough Council, and the Cambridge Domaiu Board. Failing health compelled him seme little time back to resign from public positions. He was also one of the original members ot the Alpha Masonic Lodge. Mr Kivkwood was a liberal and genial man, and was popular with all who had intercourse with him. He leaves a widow and two children to mourn their loss, and they have our heartfelt sympathy, as wc are sure they have that of all residents in the Waikato. The funeral will take place to-day, at 3.30 p.m.
