SERIOUS THOUGHTS.
THE WINGS OF GOD. " Keep me, oh, keep me, King of Kings, Beneath Thine own Almighty wings." In the monuments of ancieat Nineveh, lately brought to light, are various repro seutatives [of the Assyrian kings. Their supreme god, Asshur, is always represented as a winged figure, ever present to minister, and protect. Sometimes the diviuo presence' is thought to be suilioieiitly marked by the circle and the wings, without any figure. But although before ami after the Flood, men have wilfully gone out from "the presence" of God, and have made an idolatrous use of the symbol of the wings, still this image is often used in Scriptures. " The Lord recompense thee "* it was said to Ruth " under who3e wings thou art come to trust." "Hide mo," says David "under the shadow of Thy wings." "In the shadow of Thy wings will I make my rofuge." " He shall oover thee with His feathers and under His wings shall thou trust." "In the shadow of Thy wings will I rejoice." Psalms exxxix. this " presence" is described as world surrounding. " Whither shall I flee from Thy presence?", " the wings are to all over the earth ; and this implied protection Jesus says to Jerusalem "How often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen gathi/reth her brood under her wings, and yo would riot!, This longing of Jehovah to save and biees one chosen nation has ever since the death of Christ upon the cross been extended to all nation?. It may halp us to comprehend that Divine aud overshadowing love to realize it in the figure of " coming under the wings," What is it that constitutes a Christian ? Is it not dwelling in the Presence, coming under the wiags 'i ... It may be said of those who dwell in the Presence that they never die ; they only draw nearer and nestle closer under the Almighty wings when they leave the earth. Havo we beloved ones at the world's end—on the other side of the globe ? If they, aro iu the Presence, they are not beyond the wings. —Mrs Ranyard (F).
