AMUSEMENTS

THE EMPIRE PICTURES ‘•A LA BOHEME” Rudolph Durandin goes to the Latin quarter in Paris having quarrelled with his rich uncle, over his madness for a literary career. There he meets Mimi, a flower-maker, and in no time they are deeply in love. The uncle learns of Rudolph’s infatuation and writes to Mimi, explaining that she will ruin the young man’s life, and Mimi deserts him. Rudolph thinks that Mimi has followed the ways of the Latin quarter and gone to live with another lover. Ruuolph, and his friend Marcel, both deserted by their sweethearts, return to the rich uncle ’a home, with two of the old Latin quarter pals. A great ball takes place and during its progress, Mimi, almost dead from exposure, finds herself in the court yard. She is discovered by one of the students, and Mussetfe, Marcel ’a sweetheart. Naturally, none of this Bohemian set have any money ; but they all try to please the dying Mimo, who yearns for a muff, and there is a succession of strong pathetic scenes, each one of the students parting with some possession which he loves, to make Mima happy. They raise enough money to buy the muff, and return to the room to find Rudolph with his uncle, and Mimi dies, with the realisation that Rudolph has always loved her. A great support is Charley Chaplin in “ The Vagabond.” Full of rolling, rollicking fun and screams of laughter. Altogether a tremendous programme for the crowds who are expected to pack the Empire Theatre at Dargaville on Saturday night. Don’t miss it. DOWN RIVER.
