UNIVERSITY v. N. WAIROA. On Friday the above teams met at Mangawhare and a 'very interesting game resulted. Mr Gould, the home captain, winning the toss, elected to take the field. ’Varsity compiled a total of 157, of which Sale contributed 101, and Graham 19. Sale had a lucky innings, he being missed when his score was 6, and again at 14, and on three other occasions during his stay. Beechey for the home team played a splendid innings for 83, his hitting being clean and powerful, and had he taken advantage of the drives that did not reach the boundary and run them out to their full value, the result of the match would have been reversed despite .Sale’s lucky innings. Oliver 17, batted well. The innings closed for 138, 19 in the minority. In their second inning's ’Varsity lost 5 wickets for 68, which with the 19 from the first innings, gave them a lead of 88 .runs, when they declared their inning's closed, and gave the home team a chance of pulling the match off. With 40 minutes to go and 88 runs to get the local team had their task cut out. Runs came freely, and in the last minutes the excitement was keen, and when time was called only 4 runs were wanted to win. ’Varsity Ist innings. W. Philson, c sub. b Gould ... I W.
