PORT ALBERT.

[from our own correspondent,] The Mutual Improvement Society met for the usual weekly meeting on Saturday, September 24th ; the President in the chair. There was a good attendance of members and friends; great interest being taken in the competitive recitations, for which there were six competitors viz. Mrs B. M. Gubb, Misses Steventon and Gubb, and Messrs Judd, Partington, and J. Neal. Messrs Steventon, T. Gubb, and the Chairman, were appointed judges, and after considering for some time the President announced that they had decided to award the first prize to Miss A. Gubb. An instrumental duett by Misses Hartnell and Gubb then followed, and was very nicely played. Mrs B. M. Gubb then read an interesting article from the ‘ London Times ’ on the equality of the sexes, by Sir Edwin Clarke, which caused a very animated discussion. A reading by Mr Bridge, given in that gentleman’s well known style, brought a very enjoyable evening to a close. Our Tauhoa friends have decided to hold a Social some time in October. Mr S. E. Boler has the matter in hand, which is a guarantee of a successful turn-out. Saturday, September 24th, was looked forward to with great interest by the boating fraternity, as a race which had been arranged by Captain Peterson of the W. C. "Wentworth, was to eventuate on that day. Six boats were entered, but the wind and tide being down the river, spoilt what might have been a very good race; in fact the wind was so strong that the Captain’s boat capsized just after rounding the first mark boat, and only three boats completed the course ; the winner turning up in the boat owned and sailed by the Maories. The Port Albert Cricket Club hold their annual meeting on Saturday, October Bth, when it is to be hoped that members will roll up, and take more interest in their Club than they did last year ; they can’t expect to win matches if they do not practice. The weather has been very bad here last week, more rain falling in that time than in the two previous months together.
