TOKA TOKA LEAP YEAR BALL.

PROM A CORRESPONDENT,

The Toka Toka ladies gave their Leap year Ball on Wednesday the 22 ndinst. in the Novelty Hall which was very nicely decorated with evergreens in artificial bloom. The sixteen Chinese lanterns suspended from the centre of the hall added very much to the beautiful appearance of the ladies assembled. There were about thirty couples present, mostly all young folks, who thoroughly en3 °yed themselves until the small hours of the morning. The ladies were determined to entertain their guests at a fast and furious rate by looking well after their comforts in the shape of refreshments, and then making them dance to increase space for more of the plentiful and delicious things provided for them. Excellent music was supplied by Mr. R. M. Clark (piano) and Mr. A. Melville (violin). The duties of M. C. were ably carlied out by Misses Sanders and Eves, both young ladies looking extremely pretty and bewitching. Mrs A. Melville carried out the duties of Hon. Secretary in a very able manner, she also busied herself in looking after the comforts and wants of the guests, amongst whom I noticed Mr and Mrs Clark of Whakahara who looked extremely well and I heard numbers of people expressing pleasure seeing the old couple there. During the intervals songs were sun® by Miss Clark, Mrs H. Sills, Mr McLean and Mr Wynyard; the latter was deservedly encored being.in fine voice. None of the gentlemen present were in the orthodox suit to be made beau, but the young ladies put my mind at rest by conferring that honour on Mr A. Weighill, who next to myself aud the Ricker was the most deserving. I will not venture to say who was the Belle as all the ladies present looked charming and in grand form. I was pleased to note the absence of that objeotional pra-. t. in many other places namelv tue j., .-j and mud pie practise; everything passed ~tf very sociably and everybody enjoyed themselves and I hope that I may be present at the next Toka Toka Leap year ball, and that the young ladies will not forget to invite the Orphan again.
