Reference to a falling off in recent months in private home-building was made by the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Maddison, at a building society meeting in Hastings. While to some extent 'it might be attributed to the increased cost of building, he said, much of it was probably due to the policy, of the Government, in as much as it was creating a state of tenantry rather than encouraging private home ownership. He was convinced that a better type of citizen resulted from ownership of homes than could, result from State tenantry. He hoped that a halt would be called in State ownership in the near future.—(P.A.) Speaking of visits he made last year to Germany and Italy, Viscount Coke, first cousin to Lady Galway, who arrived in Auckland yesterday by the tourist vessel Orford, said he gathered the impression that the German people were very anxious to be friends of Great Britain, but the Italians, after the imposition' of sanctions, were anything but friendly towards Britain, Viscount Coke, who formerly was a major in the Scots Guards, witnessed Italian army manoeuvres, and in his opinion the * Italian soldiers did not compare with those of Germany in physique or efficiency. Viscount Coke will spend a good deal of his tirrie in New Zealand 'in troiit fishing.—(P.A.) At ,the recent Londoz dairy show both the Bledisloe Trophy and the Hansen Cup were awarded to the manager of the Goodwood Dairy Factory in a competition for cheeses open to world competition. This is the second time the Bledisloe Trophy has been won by Otago, the Kelso Factory winning it some time ago. In a letter from Tooley Street, Mr. 11. Taylor, inspector of dairy products in the New Zealand Department of AgrieiiVure, London, stated that t]ie winning entry was greatly praised by many English experts, and “it would have done your heart good to have heard some of the compliments passed on its qualitv. ” —* (P.A.I Cook-general wanted.
