Reginald Philip Barnes pleaded guilty in the New Plymouth Police Court yesterday morning to being found intox'icated in a car on Saturday night and was fined £25. In view of the fact that the defendant uses a motor-truck for his living, his licence was not cancelled.—(P.A.)

Taking full advantage of the prevailing spell of fine weather, shearers in the Wairarapa district have been knoeking-up some fine tallies. One of the best recorded was the performance of a gang of four, shearing at Mr. H. B. Maun sell’s station at Tinui, who in the last four days have averaged 221 sheep daily per man. The tally of the “ringer” was 270, 267, 260 and 272. With the rates at 34s a hundred, the men are finding shearing a profitable business this season. After working for a drapery firm for eighteen years, Alexander Smart stole goods valued at £1 2s 9d. Smart was charged with the theft in the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning, and he pleaded guilty, being ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within twelve months. To replace the present training college which is much too small for the training of the number of teachers required, a new building is to be erected in Dunedin. Advice of the approval by Cabinet of a grant for the erection of the new building has been received by the chairman of the Education Board from the Minister of Education. The new college will be built on an area of two and a half acres, owned by the Education Board opposite Lo* gan Park. The building will be of wood and will be ready for the commencement of the 1939 session.—(P.A.) The annual meeting of the Greytown Fruitgrowing Company held on Wednesday night. The company ex-■ ported 6543 eases of apples, as against 8421 cases last year, a decrease of 1878. Despite this it received, £5lO 17s lOd more than last year. Owing to the failure of the Hawke’s Bay crop the directors decided to send to Hastings 2000 cases of apples, for which’ they received a good price. The internal sales, including Hastings, increased by £1476 16s sd. The cider sales increased by £llO 14s 2d. The total revenue shows an increase of £1487 B.s 3d for the year. The expenditure increased by £267 10s Bd. The net profit for the year is £1321 4s lid, after allowing for depreciation, and a dividend of 5 Iper cent, was declared. Messrs F. C. Bunny and N. F.
