Ramsay MacDonald followed the hearse to the graveside at Spynie, near Lossiemouth, where Mr. MacDonald's ashes were interred beside those of his wife. Mr. Alister MacDonald and Mr. Malcolm MacDonald took it in turns to carry the urn from the station to the hillocks near Mr. MacDonald’s former home Every shop was closed and hundreds of wreaths, including one from the Japanese Foreign Minister (Mr. K. Hirota) arrived from all over the world. The Glasgow Orpheus Choir led the singing. The Rev. James Paterson, officiating at the service, said the mourners thought of Mr. MacDonald, not as a great statesman, but one of themselves.
