WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

MEETING AT OPAKI. The monthly meeting of the Opaki Women’s Institute was held on Thursday last at the home of Mrs. Wingate. Mrs Jaine presided over a fair attendance.

Mrs Beetham and Mrs Ramsay were appointed delegates to attend the halfyearly federation meeting to be held on 19th October at the Mangamutu Hall.

Mrs Wingate invited all members and friends to a card party to be held at her home on 17th inst. at 7.30 p.m. The proceeds are for Institute funds. The competition for a hand-worked tea wagon cloth was won by Mrs Ramsay with Miss Wyeth second and Mrs [Miller and Miss Wyeth equal third. Mis Physic, of Masterton, gave a very us ful and interesting demonstration on dressmaking, principally cutting and fitting, which was much appreciated by all. Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mrs Wingate, Mrs Beetham and Mrs Thompson. MARTINBOROUGH. The September meeting of the Martinborough Women’s Institute, was held on Thursday afternoon, there being a fair attendance of members and friends. After the usual business, Mrs. Caseley read an interesting letter from Mrs. Jolly, which was much appreciated by all present. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Blundell, who gave a gardening talk dealing mainly with bulb growing. Some very useful hints were gained. She was presented with a posy by Mrs. Tyler. The competition for the afternoon, for the best decorated billy, was won by Mrs. McAlpine, with Mrs. McNally second.

Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, and two competitions followed, in which all members took part. The winners were Mrs. L. Boyd and Mrs. Vile.

A very fine display of disabled soldiers’ goods was on view, and brisk business was done.
