WAIKARAPA v. DANNEVIRKE HIGH SCHOOL. GAMES PLAYED IN RAIN. (By Telegraph—“ The Age” Special.) DANNEVIRKE, July 31. Both the hockey games between the Wairarapa and the Dannevirke High Schools were played in steady rain, which increased to a downpour before the end. In spite of the heavy ground good games resulted, though in the senior Wairarapa was definitely superior. Owing to the absence of the senior bully, Nancy Spiers played in this position and gave a brilliant exhibition. Moira Whyborn filled the vacancy in the half line. Wairarapa started to attack from the jump, a hot shot glancing out off the goalie’s pads. A good centre by Jean Morice found Mary Monro in front of the goal. She made no mistake with the shot. Dannevirke then attacked hotly but Margaret Dawson made several good saves. They goaled from a scramble to equalise the score. Wairarapa then launched repeated attacks, which were met by a determined defence but one clearance by their goalie was stopped by Nancy Spiers on the edge of the circle and shot home. Clever stick work by E. Madsen and N. Spiers got them into the circle and the latter sent in a hot one. The last 10 minutes of the first spell was an anxious time for Wairarapa, Dannevirke repeatedly attacking but the defence was sound. In the second spell Wairarapa were again aggressive, the forward line all doing splendid work while Barbara Dawson at centre-half played the game of her life. Edna Madsen and Nancy Spiers each scored two more goals against resistance that was weakening but the home girls still had a shot in their locker and found the net just on the call of time, making the score 7/2 in favour of Wairarapa. The Wairarapa team was definitely on form, there being not a weak link in the team. Their opponents were rather patchy but good work was done by Molly Riddell, who scored both their goals, by the left wing, Georgina Enoha and also by Esther Millett and Audrey Nicholson in the backs.

The junior game was much more even. Though Wairarapa did more of the attacking they missed many chances through not following up but Jean Riley and Molly Dolan each put in beautiful shots to find the net. Dannevirke were weak in the circle and failed to score. Alison Davie, at cen-tre-half, put up a splendid defence. The basketball game was well contested, the visitors establishing a lead in the first few* minutes which they just succeeded in maintaining, winning by 13 to 10. Most of the goals for the winners were scored by Joan Gemmell. The Wairarapa defence was very sound and Helen Howes did excellent work in the centre. The visiting teams were entertained at a picture party on Thursday night and a dance on Friday. They return to-morrow afteriioon.
